Campaigns - Diamond Project

Diamond Project

The UK Government accepts that in order to reduce the prison population, which is at bursting point, it must reduce re-offending. Unfortunately prison sentences are not only unsuccessful in preventing re-offending but are actually likely to lead to more serious crimes after release.More than 50% of people in prison are sentenced to less than 12 months. They have committed less serious offences but are more likely to re-offend than those with longer sentences. It costs around £40,000 per year to keep one person in prison. The Government calculated that reoffending ex-prisoners cost the tax-payer at least £11 billion per year (plus the cost of whatever is being stolen or damaged).

The Diamond Project aims to answer the call for alternatives to present custodial and community sentencing and offer an opportunity for redemption and therefore a real opportunity to make a positive long-term contribution to society.

They will not just be for people with convictions but will be focused on the disenfranchised and the disadvantaged. This may include people who would currently be serving short prison or community sentences, those at risk of offending and people who have been unemployed for long periods of time.

Individuals are far more likely to re-engage with society in a marketable skills and experience. The main goal is a reduction in re-offending rates and therefore the prison population by changing citizens who will cost the tax payer £11 billion per year, into citizens who are themselves contributors to the tax base.

Individuals will pass through 3 stages focusing on building discipline and teamwork, acquiring vocational and life skills and gaining work experience. The educational focus will be trade skills such as plumbing, electricity and plastering. Major British construction companies are already keen to provide this training. Education will also be available in literacy & numeracy, information technology, financial capability, and good citizenship, among other areas. Contestability will mean each area will be supplied for by the provider offering best value.

There will be a broad source of referral to this programme, which will include not only the Judiciary but also parents, faith groups, and individuals.
